Frequently Asked Ultrasound Questions
What is an ultrasound?
An ultrasound, also known as ultrasonography or sonography, is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound imaging is non-invasive and doesn't expose patients to ionizing radiation like X-rays.
Ultrasound has many uses, including (but not limited to):
Pregnancy
Ultrasounds can help monitor the health and development of an unborn baby. They can check for birth defects, multiple fetuses, and other pregnancy complications.
Diagnosis
Ultrasounds can help diagnose a variety of medical conditions, especially those that affect soft tissues like organs, glands, and blood vessels.
Will I get my ultrasound reports and images?
For Diagnostic Ultrasound: Yes, if requested, you will be securely emailed a detailed report and images (which were reviewed and dictated by a board-certified radiologist) within 48 hours of your ultrasound. Your referring medical provider will also receive a copy of this information.
For 3D/4D Elective Ultrasound: Yes, you will be able to witness your baby move and play in real time. Images will be captured as available, and securely emailed to you within 48 hours of your ultrasound.
Can I use my health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) to pay for my diagnostic ultrasound?
Yes, you will receive a detailed medical receipt for your records. You are responsible for filing the necessary HSA/FSA paperwork.
Can I use my insurance to pay for my ultrasound?
No, Imaging Zen does NOT accept insurance for either diagnostic nor elective ultrasounds. Full cash/credit card payment is due at the time of service. However, you will receive a detailed receipt for your records and you may file the necessary paperwork for your reimbursement. Imaging Zen cannot guarantee how much (or if) your insurance will reimburse you.
What types of ultrasound services do you offer?
We offer a range of diagnostic and elective ultrasound services, including obstetric ultrasounds, abdominal scans, pelvic scans, vascular studies, and elective 2D/3D/4D imaging. Our team can help you determine which service best fits your needs.
What is the difference between diagnostic and elective ultrasounds?
Diagnostic ultrasounds are performed with a medical purpose and require an order from your physician or provider. They are used for evaluating symptoms, monitoring medical conditions, or gathering clinical information.
Elective ultrasounds are optional sessions performed for bonding and imaging purposes only and are not used for medical diagnosis.
Is an ultrasound safe for me and my baby?
Absolutely! Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and is considered safe when performed by trained ultrasound professionals following recommended guidelines.
How early can I schedule an ultrasound?
Diagnostic scans follow medical guidelines and timing set by your provider. Elective sessions can typically be scheduled as early as 8 weeks, depending on the type of experience you’re looking for.
